Programme
Lecture 1: Seizures – So Many Drugs, Which one Should I Use?
Lecture 2: Emergency Seizure Control
This session will cover the causes and types of seizures as well as the events which can mimic seizures. This will be based on video footage. From this point, we will cover the diagnostic work up recommended for seizure cases. The initial management, dealing with the refractory case and the emergency seizure case will also be discussed at length.
In this session you’ll learn:
- What does a seizure look like compared to other causes of collapse?
- What is the difference between a focal and a generalised seizure?
- How and when should you start medication?
- The use, success and side effects of all available seizure drugs for cats and dogs
- How to manage status epilepticus
Lecture 1: Non-Painful Spinal Disease of the Dog and Cat
Lecture 2: Painful Spinal Disease of the Dog and Cat
Examining the patient with spinal disease is necessary to ensure that the precise lesion localisation is determined and that neuromuscular causes of weakness are ruled out. The patient examination will be demonstrated using video cases. Based upon the lesion localisation, we will discuss the differentials of painful vs non-painful conditions and how we can work them up and treat for the treatable. The main topics discussed will be disc disease, trauma, spinal inflammatory conditions, fibrocartilaginous myelopathy, degenerative myelopathy, syringomyelia and tumors.
In this session you’ll learn:
- How to localise a spinal condition affecting the nervous system
- Causes of painful and non-painful spinal conditions
- How to diagnose and treat disc disease, FCE, degenerative myelopathy, spinal trauma and syringomyelia
Lecture 1: Cranial Nerve Dysfunctions of the Dog
Lecture 2: Vestibular Diseases of the Dog and Cat
Vestibular disease will be discussed as the poster child of the other cranial nerve diseases. Using video footage, we will discuss how to recognise vestibular disease and determine if it is central or peripheral in origin. Once this is ascertained, it is easier to suggest a more definitive diagnosis for the patient and so treating these conditions successfully will be covered. Other cranial nerve conditions discussed will include trismus, facial paresis, blindness, anisocoria and dropped jaw.
In this session you’ll learn:
- How to recognise vestibular disease
- How to determine central versus peripheral vestibular disease
- The causes of central and peripheral vestibular disease
- How to treat vestibular diseases, including CNS inflammatory causes and idiopathic dysfunction
- How to diagnose and treat other cranial nerve diseases such as trismus, blindness, anisocoria, facial paresis and dropped jaw
Course Feedback:
“Really well structured and easy to understand, will be more keen to try to give a provisional diagnosis of these problems in future”
“Covered very logically through different diseases. Good discussion on problem solving when owner finances limited so MRI not available”
“The Mini Series has helped me to look more carefully for other causes of neurological disease I can treat without need for MRI diagnosis”
